Clathrus archeri
Child and Mature
When the arms of the fungus open after "hatching",
they are joined at the tips to make a basket shape. This phase is brief
and as the fungus becomes "old", the arms separate. Basket fungi
are called Clathrus but when the arms lose contact the stinkhorns are
called Anserus. This helps explain why Clathrus archeri was once
Anserus archeri. Clathrus is Latin for a lattice, but other species
of Clathrus show much better lattice works and so which name applies
to archeri is still controversial.
The dark green "mud" lining the arms smells dreadful
and attracts flies. The mud (gleba) contains spores and sticks to visiting
insects, so spreading the fungus.
