Clathrus archeri: "Old age"

The arms of Clathrus are fused at first, but later break apart.

Each arm then has a T shape. The tips of the cross bar were once fused to the next arm. At this time it is rather like an octopus, except octopus arms do not end with a T bar. However, it has lead to the nick-name of "Stinkopuss".

The spore mass (gleba) of older fungi turns dark.

Later the old fungus starts to break up.

All these phases can be seen here in the one specimen.

See also Mutinus borneensis, a more classical horn.

More stinkhorns have been photographed but are not yet on the web. (It is more fun walking the woods to take the pictures than doing all this computer stuff, which is too much like work...)
