An Albarello

Albarello means "little tree", named after original containers made from sawn bamboo sections in which, in earlier times, drugs and resins were imported from Asia to Europe.  (Prof. K Ibbertson)

Note the typical waist of an Albarello, which widens above and below to ridges and then tapers to rims at the top and bottom. The everted top enabled a parchment cover to be tied on with string.
