| Like the
Pureora forest, ancient tree species grow here called
podocarps. David Bellamy, the exuberant English botanist, called this a "dinosaur
forest". Gondwanaland is the old continent of the Southern Hemisphere, which broke up
to form the now separate Australia, South America and Africa. Podocarps were the trees of
Gondwanaland. They have no flowers and retain their leaves, giving a dark green colour to
New Zealand forests that persists all year. An excellent track running beside the Whirinaki river is a popular tourist walk. |
