Fox Glacier Valley Panorama, 2005

Since the 1995 panorama, a large rock has crashed out of the slumped left lateral moraine. As far as I know it happened during a heavy rain storm in March 2005, just before this panorama was photographed.

Boulder threatening to fall

On the valley wall behind the panorama camera site, a large boulder was hanging precariously in a water-fall. Fortunately it did not crash down during the photography. Because of the unstable conditions, there was a warning not to walk up to the glacier after the storm.

Of course, many tourists took no notice of the warning. Large blocks of ice had washed down from Fox glacier during the storm. People enjoyed themselves walking where a roaring flood must have brought the ice, melted from the glacier cave just the night before.

The cave which drains the glacier was making huge crashing sounds as more ice fell from its roof, easily audible even from here.

A closer view of the exit cave is available in anaglyph stereo format.
