Ta Moko is Maori tattoo, especially on the face, which predated and was later incorporated into wood carving. Some modern versions of Ta Moko have been controversial as they do not always follow Maori cultural requirements.
Carving styles vary around New Zealand and are described here in detail, but unfortunately the description is complex and would be helped greatly with good photographs!
