Simpliglottis (Chiloglottis) valida

A self introduced Australian, occurs in Pinus nigra forest at Iwitahi and Hanmer Springs and in isolated spots south to Te Anau. The 22mm long flowers open on a 50mm stem in December. It spreads vegetatively in NZ because it lacks its unique pollinator. The labellum is normally held up and closed but drops down and stays down for a time when wriggled to imitate a pollinating fly; hence the name change to Simpliglottis. Chiloglottis has a fixed labellum.
