Ichthyostomum (Bulbophyllum) pygmaeum

Is NZ’s smallest orchid flower at 3mm across. Seen December to January, but often doesn’t open. Said to be self pollinating, it occurs from the Three Kings to Stewart Island. Epiphytic on a range of host trees in high rainfall areas, the 3mm diameter pseudo bulbs, which form a mat on their ovate 6mm leaves, are the plant’s trademark. The flower emerges on a slender stem from the bottom of the pseudobulb. The seed capsule is split down the middle and is often mistaken for a primitive flower.
