Nematoceras iridescens

14.

Nematoceras (Corybas) iridescens,

of the round leaved N. rivulare aggregate, is our darkest coloured orchid, although the dorsal sepal pales with maturity giving the iridescent look in bright light. Flowers about 25mm long, open in August to October from south of Mt Pirongia to Stewart Island. Far south forms are brownish and may be distinct. Prefers shady sites in year-long seepages in drain sides or ground seepages typical of Taranaki papa.
