| Nematoceras (Corybas) trilobum
was the first of this large aggregate to be named for its three lobed leaf, the third lobe being the tiny apiculus at the tip. The leaf stands say 70mm tall with the dark flower hunched on a short peduncle at the base. South Island forms are brownish and may be distinct. It flowers from October in the Wairarapa to November in Otago. Typical of the aggregate, a gnats’ egg pocket, mid labellum is placed conveniently for a fungus gnat, mistaking the orchid for a toad stool, to lay her eggs therein whilst her head is in contact with the closely spaced stigma and pollinia. |
