Sullivania minor

24.

Sullivania (Paracaleana) minor,

the flying duck orchid, is NZ’s rarest, found now only at Whakarewarewa, but it is common in Australia where it is pollinated by pseudo-copulation of a wasp, which doesn’t occur here. The uppermost labellum triggers with an audible click when the male wasp alights on the black calli (mimicking the female) and flings the wasp onto the pollinia below at the tip of the broad column. Typically the stem is 150mm tall with 1-7 flowers about 15mm long. The solitary leaf is long and slender. Prefers sandy loams in warm dry sites.
