Thelymitra aff. ixioides,

our blue spotted sun orchid, stands some 400mm tall, has a single leaf and say 5 flowers about 22mm across and typically of the aggregate, opens only on hot, humid, sunny days. It has friable pollen and full seed capsules and so was long thought to be self pollinated. However a black Thrips 0.8mm long, is now implicated in vestigial cross pollination, with fall-back self pollinating. The Australian ancestor, T. ixioides, opens its many flowers wide and is pollinated by large insects, which can carry whole pollinia.
