| Thelymitra matthewsii
is a single flowered (very rarely twin) self introduced, Australian sun orchid. It prefers open sandy silt, facing north, with a natural low hedge surround, in full sun, remote from browsers. The single narrow leaf has a right hand thread spiral. It opens in late August to early September in the far north only, favouring pockets filled with alluvium in the old hardened sandhills. Stands say 120 tall with the 25mm wide flower opening in the warmth. It drops the four pollinia onto its own stigma with the first wind vibration. The large yellow anther takes the role of insect attractor in place of the usual post anther lobe of the column in other sun-orchids. So no doubt some cross pollination takes place. The cruelly spined Hakea sericea, an Australian weed shrub, infests much of the far north habitat and serves admirably in keeping rabbits and hares away from these orchids. |
