Thelymitra aff. longifolia

29.

Thelymitra aff. longifolia

has up to 24 pink to white flowers opening all at once in only warm cloudy conditions, atypical of NZ sun orchids. Said to be pollinated by novice native bees, which mistake it for manuka blossom, but soon learn their mistake with no rewards for visiting the plants. The 25mm flowers are difficult to distinguish from the ancestral T. longifolia, which normally opens only one or two flowers reluctantly. T. aff. longifolia is dominant in the north and appears to be supplanting T. longifolia as it migrates south, so far only to the Tararua Range.
