| Winika (Dendrobium) cunninghamii
is our largest flowered and endemic epiphyte. It favours the top branches of tall native trees in high rainfall areas but is also found near the ground. The 25mm flowers open in December in the north to January in Stewart Island and the Chathams. The purple centred form opens most years but when conditions are favourable, the green centred form can eclipse it for sheer quantity. The species lacks any pseudobulb, hence the name change. |
