Calochilus aff. herbaceus alba

Stereoscopic NZ native orchid by Eric Scanlen

Calochilus aff. herbaceus alba

This is, or was, a rare mutant lacking colour except for the green chloroplasts thereby making it a botanic outcast.  It grew for many years in a damp hollow of the Earth Wall Track at Te Paki but kanuka has overgrown the site and the orchid hasn’t shown up since these shots were taken on 20/10/96.

Two to four ±23mm long flowers per ±250mm stem of this bearded orchid showed those two “eyes” or glands on the column wings.  No purpose has been ascribed to the “eyes” but its fierce appearance may have deterred would be browsers.  This rarity may have been lost to us, from studied neglect.
