Gastrodia aff. sesamoides

Stereoscopic NZ native orchid by Eric Scanlen

Gastrodia aff. sesamoides a plant with no chlorophyll that lives like a medium sized kumara most of its life but every 2-4 years puts up a flower spike in the interests of spreading seed. It was rare in native bush but has taken a liking to Pinus radiata so now thrives as never before.  The flower is inverted, (nonresupinate) with the labellum at the top, three sepals and two petals united in a tube and a long column peeping out under the labellum.  This spike was in the Matakawau Reserve on 17/12/97.  Some silver fern stuck behind it is close background to avoid eye disturbing anomalies and to give my auto exposure a chance.
