Nematoceras "craigielea"

Stereoscopic NZ native orchid by Eric Scanlen

Nematoceras “craigielea” a tiny N, triloba agg. from Craigie Lea near Te Wharau in the Wairarapa.  It grows by a watercourse through manuka which has taken over a pasture.  Flowering on 6/10/01.  Pollinated by a fungus gnat which has been drawn by Ian St George who tag named the orchid.  The gnat had wedged itself into the labellum cleft and perished in the attempt.  Evidence points to this and others of its ilk mimicking tiny toadstools with its rounded dorsal sepal and possibly fungus scent. The tight space in the cleft is where tiny flies eggs are sometimes found and a fungus gnat has been photographed with pollinia stuck to the top of its thorax.
