Punting on the Avon as it passes through Hagley
Park. You can paddle a hired canoe, or enjoy a guided tour on a classical
Cambridge punt as here.
The Peacock Fountain in
Christchurch Botanical Gardens, with the Arts
Centre behind it.
The Arts Centre buildings are the old University of Canterbury, which moved
to Ilam in 1975. It is fascinating to wander among the craft shops and
cafes to find unusual New Zealand hand-made gifts.
Whitebaiting at
the mouth of the Waimakariri River, just North of Christchurch, at Kaiapoi,
We will shortly see the "Whymac" again, in Arthurs Pass National
Park.
Whitebait about
to be poured into the bucket. Whitebait are larval fresh-water fish which
have proved elusive this year (2000) (Fishing was slightly better 2001). This chap took all day to
catch enough for one fritter, but his mates nearby caught none. The
usually good West Coast Rivers (to be shown later) did even worse in 2000.
